CHAPTER ELEVEN
Forging Ahead
The rest of the week saw Elliot run the gamut emotionally. At first he was subdued and rather complacent in listening to what Marcel and his team had to say. He ate his mashed up pureed food and didn’t complain too much.
Grousing.
That’s the word he liked to use. A word that I’d picked up on using as well, mostly because it was so him. He seemed to think it was a more precise word than complain.
“Complaining is for common folk.”
To which his father replied, “Well, what the hell do you think we are?”
This before snorting like the big bull of a guy that he is. Honestly, I was so smitten with my future father-in-law I almost popped the question to Elliot in that hospital room so we could get hitched right then and there. I so wanted to be a part of this family. Only, I knew I wanted our wedding to be over-the-top dramatic and awe-inspiring; my guy deserved nothing less. I already had an idea of how to do it. I just didn’t know if I could pull it off or not.
By the end of the week any pretense in going along with whatever was to be done was truly out the window. He became surly and cantankerous to where I nearly had to bitch slap him to get him to behave. I wasn’t beyond it, metaphorically speaking. We’d had quite enough with any physical stuff.
Marcel told me to chill out. It was to be expected.
“In the best of times it is hard to cope with it all. Elliot has the added complication that he’s got his mouth wired so he can’t feel any way to properly voice his frustration. It’s how it goes sometimes. Not to worry,” he said even though I could see a thread of real concern moving across his face as we both watched Elliot maneuver once again into his electric wheelchair to use the bathroom during one of his therapy sessions.
“He will come back to you, you know. It will just take a little time. If you love him like I think you do, then it will be … eh, how you say it? Right as rain, no?”
I nodded. He gave me a hug before moving onto another patient.
I got Elliot back up to his room. He was sullen and moody, though when I got him back into his bed he pawed at me until I came up close. He encircled his arms around me, as best he could, whispering in that strained way, “Don’t be mad at me. I’m trying to deal with it. It’s just so hard, sweetheart. Don’t leave me, okay?”
“Hey now, what makes you think a little frustration’s going to put me off of you? Better or worse, right? Isn’t that what we’re signing up for?”
He nodded, tears rolling down his cheeks in what I was sure was some form of shame in how he’d been behaving.
“Tell you what. I think I’ve got a surprise for you that if we get through to Monday that will completely change your world.
